Resin was chosen as the post facility for the project providing offline editorial, online conform of the HDCAM SR footage, motion design, compositing and grade. We also provided visual effects supervision during the 3 day shoot directed by Robi Watt.

The team shared design, compositing, tracking and colour work. The commercial required multiple sky replacements, matte paintings of cityscapes, wire removal, one shot which was a composite of 8 separate passes and the composite of our presenter filmed green screen on to a laptop whilst type was playful animated and composited into the scenes.

In the project workflow everything conformed to Resin’s recently completed grading theatre for final colour work.

Given this commercial was produced purely for the silver screen we adopted a pipeline usually reserved for feature film work performing a film grade (LOG) maintaining maximum latitude and full colour fidelity for the film transfer. Utilising cineSpace colour management and a calibration probe, Resin created a profile of their theatre and then the film lab, Dreamlight Imaging, printed a series of test images that are used to create a profile of how the film lab translates a LOG image to film. A 3D LUT (look up table) was created to emulate the look of the 35mm printed film on Resin’s digital projection system so that the director and colorist are seeing an accurate representation of what the image will look like when it goes to film.

The director, client and agency appreciated the benefit of previewing the finished commercial in a viewing environment that enabled them to appreciate the scale of seeing it on the big screen and the knowledge that exacting attention would ensure a seamless translation to film.
