We’ve been crazy busy which is awesome and on some really interesting stuff. Can’t wait to share with all of you some of the character based promos the studios been working on over the past few months. Also excited to hear Red Dog starred at the Berlin Film Festival and was warmly received, congrats Kriv, Nelson, Julie, Marc, Jill and all involved.

Like this blog we’ve let our pr activities slide a bit over recent times and when all else fails nothing makes you feel like you’re back in the game than getting a new reel cut. I must admit the hardest part of creating a reel is finding a piece of music to build the reel around. I’m not one for finding something that is too up to the minute or mainstream which often makes the task more time consuming. I found this track from Messer Chups that just worked. Previously we’ve threaded a bit of script through the reel, feedback was positive, this time we thought we’d keep short and sharp and stay under the two minute barrier. We also decided to let go a lot of the older things that whilst are still reel worthy we eventually needed to say goodbye. So this really is just a reel of the past 12-18 months with maybe one or two exceptions.

One thing we thought best to work in was a quick before/after shot to show the furry quoll running in the electromatic. It seems a number of our clients didn’t realise it was CG and were wondering what we actually did on the job - what an awesome compliment.

Hope you like, feel free to leave some feedback or questions.

You can check the reel on the site or for those viewing in the browser the embed below.

ps. And if anyone was following the making of an ident…it’s not forgotten but definitely suffering a slow and painful death. We have got a board fairly resolved which we’ll post soon. Anyone want to fund making it

So here’s our thoughts on how we are going to approach it.

How do we interpret the essence of Resin in motion?
Hardly ground breaking, but we’d like to convey key characteristics of the studio and our work in an abstract manner. Our studio is quite diverse and not really defined by a house style or niche but we have been able to define the qualities of what we do and stand for and the piece should echo those.

To embody the essence of Resin we determined the piece should be artistic, bold, dramatic, contain subtlety, evoke curiosity, be well architected, contain an element of the unexpected, layering of detail, visually and aurally arresting, demonstrates a high level of refinement and attention to detail. It should be engaging for the viewer and leave them with the desire to watch it again and explore the piece which will reveal more each time you view it. It should immediately demand the attention of the viewer for this small moment and leave them seeking more, it should be desirable and exclusive.

Visual influences
Liquids, smoke, light
Contemporary architecture
High end vehicle design – metallics – lighting – reflections
Forms in nature that appear as if they could have been designed or engineered
Light and lenses – narrow depth of field, bokeh lights, distant lights
Translucency, caustics and colour bleed

Below are a few images we collected to start painting a picture. Next post we’ll explore some sketches for an idea.

At Resin, each year we create an internal project that we use as a creative outlet. All of the work we do is service based work so this is an opportunity for us to be the client and the service provider.

As this type of project is internally funded they can often drag on for quite a period of time and some cases they haven’t reached completion. A noteworthy example below was something we started back in 2007 as we wanted to further our knowledge with fluid simulation. The project sat half complete for quite some time and was then picked up again toward the end of 2008 and finished off. An unexpected result was the project then led to a series of real project enquiries.

At the start of this year we talked about creating a new ident for Resin. The brief was distilled down to create a mood piece that evokes the essence of Resin.

This is the first post of what will be a series over an indefinite period of time. Next post in the series will go into response to the brief and the treatment ideas.

Our Ident from 2008.
The AEAF (Australian Effects and Animation Festival) have announced the finalist list for the 2010 awards. Whilst these are an Australian award, entries are pretty far reaching. You only have to look at the calibre of some of the work that has made the finalist cut and the big names featured from all over the world. It’s pretty cool for us to have made the finalist list with two of our projects; Lancer Defy Physics and Lennox Absolute Comfort. Speculation over your likely success at any awards is hard to call at the best of times. A quick skim through the list and I’m sure we’ve got it sewn up
