We were presented with the opportunity to create a film that embodied the essence of the Lancer Evolution and encapsulated 'Defy Physics'. It was also important to demonstrate the powerful nature of the car whilst maintaining safe driving.
The Solution
Starting at sketch level, we took inspiration from the mood of futurist films like Bladerunner and the neon cities that have developed a cult following for the Evo. We set about designing an environment and time of day that would show the car off and put interesting light and reflection details back into the car. We also considered how the design of the environment could make the ride more dynamic without the car needing to drive fast. The car and environment were created in 3D with an enormous attention to detail in getting the car realistic. Studying real track footage of the Evo we worked to emulate the things that happen in real life but are often tricky to control and have looking right when you have to get them in camera. We used the freedom of the CG camera to create a more dynamic drive, amplify the Evo's aggressive looks and create a real sense of purpose. The end result was received with glowing praise by the agency and client who acknowledged if they hadn't been a part of the process they would have thought the car was the real thing.
